Being one of the biggest clubs in South Africa, Orlando Pirates will no doubt be looking to keep up with the times, riding the waves of change in the modern game. Having said that, is it about time the club start shifting their focus on the future, as opposed to the ‘now’?
The modern game demands constant and instant change, and looking at the current Pirates squad, one could basically say that all departments need work.
Finding a coach should be the main priority for Pirates at the moment, following the resignation of Vladimir Vermezovic last year. Defensively, the squad boasts some of the most experienced defenders in the country, however, there is no denying that they are ageing and won’t keep much longer.
In midfield, we could lose our best player in Oupa Manyisa, as he is reportedly on the verge of joining Mamelodi Sundowns. Finding a replacement will never be easy, but this just underlines the fact that yet another major decision needs to be made.
Our striking department may be more stable than most clubs in the Premier Soccer League, as both Kermit Erasmus and Lehlohonolo Majoro have been in fine goal scoring form this season. However it remains to be seen how the two hit men will gel together, as there have been mixed reactions from the technical staff on the pair starting together.
These are all major decisions that need to be made, should Bucs begin to think ahead?
