Orlando Pirates left-back Patrick Phungwayo is having one of his best seasons at Mayfair, following his recent spike in form. Despite not being a first choice defender for Bucs, he still managed to earn himself a national team call up on a few occasions.
However, taking everything into consideration, is Phungwayo being treated a little bit unfairly at Bucs?
Well for one, Phungwayo never disappointed when called upon. He patiently waited for his chance, with some fans even wanting both Phungwayo and Thabo Matlaba to play on the same pitch. Yes, that’s how much he is loved amongst the fans.
Playing second fiddle at any team can be mentally and emotionally draining, as one would be forced to think where it all went wrong. With Phungwayo being a player in form, he may even be confused as to what is left for him to do to earn a regular place in the starting XI.
Lastly, with his contract expiring at the end of the current Premier Soccer League season, does Phungwayo sign the new deal that was offered to him knowing that he will remain second choice behind Matlaba, or is his loyalty too strong despite being in this predicament?
Having said that, what would you do if you were in Phungwayo’s boots?
