The Fan Park Crew decided to roll back the years, and discuss a few players, some legends and great technicians, who would absolutely dominate football if they were playing in today’s era.
The non-flying Dutchman would easily notch up at least 15 league goals a season if he were playing today, and to add to that, he’s probably provide 20 assists as well. Bergkamp was a player the world loved watching, and since the English Premier League has changed to more of a European style of play over the years, I believe the master technician would thrive in it.
It’s no doubt that Alan Shearer was one of the finest strikers that the Premier League has ever seen, but I believe that if Shearer was a 25-year-old forward in today’s more modern football style, he’d be scoring even more goals than he did before. Back then, strikers were hassled and harried for the ball for 90 minutes, but today the referees are a lot stricter.
The Frenchman was a top player when he was at Arsenal years ago, but today, he would have excelled ever more. I firmly believe that Pires had technique that matches the David Silva’s and Andres Iniesta’s of today, and it would have been a pleasure to watch him elegantly break through some of best defences in modern football.
Current superstar Lionel Messi has been compared to this legend, as the 27-year-old has a similar style to his compatriot. Watching footage of Maradona, it’s easy to come to the conclusion that he’d probably do similar damage to that of Messi in the modern era, if not more!
The football world desperately misses a leader in defence like this Italian legend, but there will only ever be one Maldini. I can’t think of another defender that has shown the same skill, leadership, and will to win as he did during his career. Today, Maldini would give these diving strikers real reasons to stay down.
Can you name any other past players who you believe would dominate in football today?
