The Premier League is regarded as one of the toughest leagues in world football and is a destination for many aspiring players. It has also been a goal for many South African footballers, with the likes of Aaron Mokoena, Lucas Radebe, Benni McCarthy and Steven Pienaar among the most popular to have represented South Africa in the EPL.
Here are some Mzansi stars who could be ready to play in the England's top flight:
The FC Twente star is a player on the rise in the Eredivisie and has been one of the club's top performers in the past couple of seasons. Twente director Ted van Leeuwen recently compared him to Netherlands star Nigel de Jong and mentioned that there are not many players like him in the Dutch top flight. At 24, Mokotjo continues to flourish in the Netherlands and is not far off from reaching a league as competitive as the EPL.
"Cream" may be in the unfortunate position of being low down in the pecking order at Ajax Amsterdam, but that's not to say he has been in poor form. Serero was most impressive last season, not only in the Eredivisie, but also in the UEFA Champions league. When playing against Paris Saint-Germain and FC Barcelona, Serero seemed completely unfazed at having to face players like Andres Iniesta and Blaise Matuidi. Taking his style of play into consideration, he could suit the style of play of teams like Arsenal or Southampton.
Since he made the move abroad to Oostende in Belgium, Jali has grown in stature and is now seen as one of the top players in Belgium. One of his best games, however, came in the colours of Bafana Bafana, when the team took on Nigeria in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier earlier this year. He completely bossed Chelsea star John Obi Mikel in the middle of the park, even though he is so much smaller in size than the Nigerian.
Which other South African stars do you think could be ready for the EPL?
