Katlego Mphela announced his arrival on the local football scene as a deadly and clinical goal scoring striker for SuperSport United in 2006, and earned himself the rightful name of ‘Killer’ after proving to be ruthless in front of goal.
A big money move to Mamelodi Sundowns materialised two years later, which saw him continue in his rich vein of goal scoring form. However, it was towards the end of 2013 where he fell out of favour at Chloorkop. He then joined Kaizer Chiefs in a move which bared very little fruits, as Killer now struggles to make an impact at Naturena.
‘Killer’ was then seeking game time, which was something he did not receive at Downs, and his move to Chiefs last season left many confused as he joined a squad that already had strikers battling for places in the starting line-up.
It can be said that for the past two years, Mphela has been a shadow of his former self. Yes injury may have hampered his progress at Chiefs, but would he be a starter ahead of players like Bernard Parker and David Zulu, who look to be in good form as of late?
It seems to be an uphill battle to regain the form he once had, and we have to take into consideration the fact that he is now in his 30's, so youth is no longer on his side.
Taking all these factors into account, would you say that things are going downhill from here for Killer?
