Cristiano Ronaldo wasn’t handed his third Ballon d’Or title for no reason, and his form this season has further proven why he deserved it. Staggeringly, his current strike tally is 28 league goals for the current campaign… which equates to the addition of four of the PSL’s top league scorers.
As clubs prepare for the resumption of the league next Tuesday, the Fan Park crew have played with some numbers and picked up an interesting statistic…
South Africa’s league is notorious for the lack of prolific strikers, and it is in dire need of someone who can bang in the goals regularly. However, Ronaldo does this week in and week out for Real Madrid.
Looking at the goalscoring charts by the midway point of the PSL season, it would take four of our current leading scorers to match Ronaldo’s 28-goal tally.
Here are the PSL’s leading strikers:
Moeketsi Sekola (Free State Stars) – 8
Puleng Tlolane (Polokwane City) – 8
Geofrey Massa (University of Pretoria) – 7
Lehlohonolo Majoro (Orlando Pirates) - 6
TOTAL OF GOALS: 29
Incredibly, Ronaldo's exploits are not only limited to league action, boasting a grand total of 36 goals across all competitions.
It seems that strikers in the PSL are still a long way from reaching the heights of the European game. What do you guys think of this?
