Much was said about striker Bernard Parker’s 10 league goals in last season's Absa Premiership campaign, which ultimately led to him winning the Lesley Manyathela award for the most goals scored in the league for the season.
That is by no means a tally to be proud of, as it is the general consensus for strikers to hit near the 20 goal mark at the very least to be branded as a top player.
It would be unfair to compare the Premier Soccer League to top European ones, but to put things into perspective for you… there are defenders in Europe who score close to 10 goals in a season regularly.
One would easily think that such a feat would never happen again, and in Parker’s case, he never really seemed to improve from last season’s poor showings in front of goal.
Yes he may have suffered an injury set-back earlier on in the season, and to some extent it could justify his poor performances this time around. Nevertheless, he is still regarded as a top player in South Africa and should know what it takes to perform consistently.
He has also been used in two positions this season, with the number 10 and number nine role being assigned to him.
I feel though that beyond this season, we will begin to see less and less of Parker’s quality as it looks as he seems to be lacking the hunger to be better than before.
Do you agree?
