At the beginning of the season, the trio of Mandla Masango, George Lebese and George Maluleka took the Absa Premiership by storm with their combination play for Kaizer Chiefs. As the season progressed, we began seeing less of the deadly trio.
Is it fair to say that MaLeMa is no longer effective?
Yes, these are three quality players in their own right, and individually they add different dimensions to the Amakhosi attacking department.
Masango’s pace and eye for goal makes him one of the best wingers in the league. We know that Lebese’s finesse and touch can leave any defender for dead, while Maluleka adds to the versatility of the squad - as he can play in an advanced role, or as a deep lying attacking midfielder.
Going into the second half of the season, coach Stuart Baxter’s rotation policy may have broken separated the triplets as names like Siphiwe Tshabalala and Bernard Parker worked their way back into the starting XI from injury.
Also, all three players have looked rather unconvincing in recent times, with Lebese having off-the-field issues, while Maluleka and Masango have experienced slight dips in form.
