It has been no secret that Kaizer Chiefs’ main ambition for the season is indeed finishing first in the league title race, thus making the CAF Champions League second priority. But in order to compete adequately, will Chiefs bow out of the CCL?
Since the turn of the New Year, the Glamour Boys have seen their lead cut to eight points with just six games remaining, and there have been predictions of a repeat of last year’s stutter near the finish line.
Stuart Baxter’s men famously threw away their lead over Sundowns last term, allowing the Brazilians to overtake them and be named the new Absa Premiership champions.
That story has haunted Chiefs since, and the reason for their slump in form was pinned on Amakhosi having played in Africa.
The taxing schedule of traveling around the continent, coupled with domestic and cup games, proved too much for Baxter’s men, and now the same could be suggested for this season too.
Since the league resumed in February 2015, the Sowetan giants saw their undefeated run come to an end, and they have been struggling for goals.
Their dip in form has left Sundowns and Pirates breathing down their necks, and there are fears that Chiefs could suffer the same fate in the title race again this year.
In order to avoid this, the best thing could be elimination from the CAF Champions League in order to lighten the load, and focus their full attention on the remaining six games in the league.
With Chiefs heading to Morocco needing to overturn a 1-0 deficit, Baxter may well settle for elimination.
Khosi fans, do you think this is possible?
