Many people come to football stadiums to watch their teams play with the hope of witnessing magic from the attacking talent on display. Not many in this sense would especially go to a football stadium to watch the more defensive and less creative players on the pitch.
That being said, Kaizer Chiefs not only managed to win the Absa Premiership with some of the most beautiful attacking football but more importantly, on a rock solid defence.
Compared to Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates, how well did we do defensively this season?
With two games to go, the goals conceded statistic are in our favour. With 28 games played the Glamour Boys have only let in 12 goals, with Pirates conceding 26 and Downs conceding 22 goals in the league so far.
The reason for this could come down to the point of Bucs and Downs rotating their backline frequently throughout the season, where as we have stuck to the trusted line of defence of Siboniso Gaxa, Tefu Mashamaite, Eric Mathoho and Tsepo Masilela for most of the season.
We had continuity and stability in this regard...
We also made more tackles per game this season than Bucs and Sundowns. On average, we make 3.63 tackles per game, which is way more than Pirates and Downs who made 2.88 and 2.74 tackles on average per game respectively.
This is a clear indication of our back-line being more urgent in wanting to close down and stop opponents more often.
Our defenders have also mastered the art of reading the game in terms of making interceptions. In this aspect of our game we completely blast Pirates and Downs out the water as we have made 17.13 interceptions per-game, compared to 13.8 made by Pirates and only 10.3 interceptions made Sundowns on average per game.
These are three vital aspects of a defenders game and the numbers show that we have simply been better than our rivals when shutting opponents down.
Do you think this our defence won the league title more than anything else?
