Hello fellow Buccaneers! Yesterday it was announced that Tshepo Gumede completed his transfer to Orlando Pirates from Platinum Stars. His arrival has been deemed nothing short of positive, but will his arrival push out the old guard?
For years now, Rooi Mahamutsa, Lucky Lekgwathi and Siyabonga Sangweni have been the mainstay in the Bucs defence.
Their ability to command the backline with full effect left management not needing to shop for reinforcements in defence over the past three seasons, however, this year a different story has been told.
Age has certainly caught up with the defensive trio, with Sangweni and Mahamutsa both 33-years-old and club icon, Lekgwathi, sitting as one of the oldest players in the league at 38.
Pirates have conceded 16 goals so far this season, and have often been left exposed. Nonetheless, with Gumede coming in, he will add youth, pace, stability and strength to the backline.
Gumede, 23-years-old, has been a pillar of strength for Platinum Stars over the course of the past two seasons, and his arrival will surely see him take over from one of these veterans.
With 10 years of youthfulness on his side, will he start to ease out the old guard and leave room for younger and fresher faces to come in? What do you think?
