The Orlando Pirates defence has been an area of concern in the last couple of seasons or so, as many fans feel that the current group of defenders are going off the pace. In a bid to change all that, we signed Tshepo Gumede from Platinum Stars in the January transfer window.
With that said, is Gumede ready to oust either Siyabonga Sangweni or Rooi Mahamutsa?
Sangweni was signed during the 2011/2012 Absa Premiership season on the back of an impressive spell with Golden Arrows previously. Making an immediate impact at the club, Sangweni was one of the best players in the Premier Soccer League during the club's treble winning showings the following season - picking up a PSL Player of the Year nomination in the process.
Mahamutsa’s robust approach to the game made him an instant fan favourite and the player himself has been one of the best defenders in the country for quite some time now. However, with Mahamutsa now entering the twilight years of his career, and so too Sangweni, the club continue to look at younger replacements in the transfer market.
There’s no doubt that in terms of pedigree and success, Gumede has a long way to go. Yes, he may have had a successful stint with Platinum Stars, winning various cup competitions along the way, but emulating that success at a club like Pirates is whole different ball game.
Does Gumede have the temperament to make it as an authentic Bucs defender?
