Siboniso Gaxa and Tsepo Masilela are two full-backs who have, over the years, made a mark as two of South Africa's best defenders. Not many local defenders have consistently performed the way Gaxa and Masilela have, however, there will come a time where they will tire out.
Reflecting on the pair individually, the Fan Park crew will give insights on the two marauding defenders and why Chiefs should take extra care of them going forward.
Pa Gaxa is now 30-years-old and has the best of his glittering career almost behind him. Yet, he manages to perform week in and week out, still displaying the stamina of his younger days. In one-on-on situations, Gaxa is still one of the hardest defenders to beat, however, with the modern game becoming faster and faster, he may fall off the pace sooner rather than later. What can the club do to maintain his legs? Well simply put, rest him from time to time, especially in clashes against lower opposition. Cup games could also provide time for Gaxa to rest a bit, as he would be needed in the much bigger and intense matches.
Like Gaxa, Masilela is now slowly approaching the twilight years of his career and the club may well take caution in protecting one of their greatest defenders. With age comes the risk of becoming more prone to injury and for the first time this season, Masilela faces some time on the first aid bench. Masilela sat out of the 2-0 loss to SuperSport United last week in the Absa Premiership due to injury, and will no doubt be taking caution once he returns to action. Yes, as one of the club's best players this season, Chiefs should nurture Masilela in terms of his fitness level so as to prolong his career to the best of their abilities.
Having said that, do you think Chiefs are doing enough to prolong their careers?
