Today, the Fan Park crew takes a look at five of the biggest upsets that the world has ever seen.
Chelsea 2-4 Bradford City
This weekend, Chelsea were knocked out of the FA Cup by League One side Bradford City, despite playing at home and being 2-0 up. Many are calling it the greatest upset of recent FA Cup history, and even Jose Mourinho said he was ashamed and embarrassed.
AC Milan 3-3 Liverpool
In 2005, an AC Milan side that included the likes of Kaka, Andriy Shevchenko, Hernan Crespo, Andrea Pirlo and several other greats was beaten on penalties by Rafael Benitez’s Liverpool despite being 3-0 up at half-time. Not only was it an incredible comeback, but a huge mismatch in quality between the two teams
Baroka FC 2-1 Kaizer Chiefs
Vodacom League side Baroka FC caused a major upset in 2011, beating Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 to reach the Nedbank Cup semi-finals. Knowledge Musona had put the Amakhosi in the lead in the 36th minute, but Baroka refused to throw in the towel and went on to make an epic comeback that left thousands in shock.
Barcelona 1-0 Inter Milan (aggregate 2-3)
In 2010, Jose Mourinho’s Inter Milan were drawn against the Barcelona team which has been described as the best of all time. They won the first leg 3-1 in the San Siro and had their backs up against the wall in the return leg at the Camp Nou, after Thiago Motta was shown a red card in the first-half. However, a defensive masterclass orchestrated by Mourinho saw them scrape through the tie, losing 1-0 in Catalonia, but progressing thanks to the 3-2 aggregate score line. They went on to win the Champions League that season.
Maluti FET College 4-1 Orlando Pirates
In February 2013, Orlando Pirates were given a thrashing by the completely unfancied Maluti FET College, who humbled them in the Nedbank Cup by putting four goals past the Buccaneers. At the time, Maluti were playing in the Vodacom League. The amateur side will never forget the day that they stunned the Soweto giants.
Football is a funny game, and the beauty is that anybody can win at any time, no matter if you’re the big guy, or the little guy…
