We have seen two players recently banned for spitting in the Premier League (Jonny Evans and Papiss Cisse) and this prompted Blaugrana to go do some digging and find out which other players have been involved in spitting incidents.
Frank Rijkaard - Holland v Germany 1990
Holland v Germany is one biggest games in international football, and back in the 90’s the rivalry was as fierce as ever. Frank Rijkaard and Rudi Voller were at the helm of it all and it started with a rough tackle. Rijkaard came in with fierce tackle on Voller, which was followed by a few words and a mouth full of gob, by the Dutchman.
Patrick Vieira - West Ham v Arsenal 1999
The French enforcer is no stranger to getting booked or getting into tussles with players. Things got heated in this match and Vieira was, of course, at the thick of it all - and saw him spit at Neil Ruddock, with whom he had words with all game. He got given a six-match ban and £30,000 fine a few days later.
Lionel Messi - Malaga v Barcelona 2008
This incident just shows you that even the world’s best get it wrong at times. Here we saw the Argentine spit on the back of Malaga winger Duda’s shirt after being tormented by some rough tackling from his opponent throughout the game.
Francesco Totti - Italy v Denmark, 2004
Denmark’s Christian Poulsen was on the receiving end of some Phlegm in his face by Totti at Euro 2004. The Roma striker was charged with 'gross unsporting conduct' and was banned for three games. In the same tournament, Alexander Frei of Switzerland received the same punishment for a similar incident involving Steven Gerrard during England’s 3-0 win.
Cristiano Ronaldo - Derby v Manchester United 2009
The former Manchester United player had a few nasty incidents back in England, but this one was a stand out with former bad boy Robbie Savage. The two were at each other all game and we eventually saw Ronaldo on his knees with Savage clutching onto his shirts. The Portuguese was photographed aiming spit at Savage.
Can you think any other incidents like these that have stood out?
