The Golden Boy trophy has been around since 2003 and it’s awarded to the world's best player under the age of 21. The Fan Park Crew has done some research and brought you five previous winners of the trophy - which is now held by Paul Pogba.
2003 – Rafael van der Vaart
The Dutchman came through the Ajax youth academy, before leaving for the like of Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur. The midfielder has played three European Championships and two World Cups since his award, and is currently playing for Hamburg in the Bundesliga.
2004: Wayne Rooney
The England and Manchester United captain won the prestigious award back in 2004. The Englishman has played in numerous positions in his career already, but his preferred one seems to be the number 10 role. He has gone onto represent England 101 times and scored 46 goals.
2006: Cesc Fabregas
Former Barcelona and Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas is now back in the Premier League, dominating the midfield for leaders Chelsea. Fabregas has also been to two World Cups with Spain, and is currently leading the Premier League's assist charts after setting up 13 goals for his teammates.
It’s hard to believe it, but former Manchester United midfielder Anderson was once a Golden Boy winner… The Brazilian was a talented youngster back in the day, but unfortunately things didn’t quite work out when he moved to Manchester United. He won the Champions League and Premier League with the Red Devils in his career, but now finds himself back in Brazil trying to rediscover some form.
2010: Mario Balotelli
The troubled Italian won the award during his time at Manchester City. Balotelli has played for four different clubs in his short career already, including Milan rivals Inter and AC Milan. Since arriving at Liverpool he has struggled and if performances don’t improve dramatically, he might see himself on the move again.
