This evening, the Fan Park Crew takes a look at five famous transfers that took place on deadline day through the years.
Here is our list:
Wayne Rooney – Everton to Manchester United
At the time, Rooney was an 18-year-old playing for Everton under former Manchester United manager David Moyes. The striker got signed by the Red Devils on deadline day in 2004, and became the most expensive player under the age of 20. Rooney played 67 matches for Everton and scored 15 goals before making his move.
Falcao – Monaco to Manchester United
Falcao was jetted in on a private plane on transfer deadline day at the start of this season. The Colombian had a whole host of clubs after his signature at the time, but manager Louis Van Gaal persuaded him to join his new project with the Red Devils. Falcao missed out on the World Cup due to a knee injury, and had hardly got any game time after his recovery before joining United.
Steven Pienaar – Tottenham to Everton
The former South African captain left Everton for Spurs in 2011, but quickly returned to his former club the following season. Pienaar was first on loan at the Toffees for six months, but the club were so happy to have him back they made it permanent. He has made 66 appearances for the club since his return and has scored seven goals.
Luis Suarez – Ajax Amsterdam to Liverpool
Suarez was a wanted man back in 2011, but the Reds managed to persuade him to move to the Premier League. Liverpool weren’t in European competition at the time, but managed to do a great bit of business with Ajax to get the Uruguayan. Suarez scored 49 goals for Ajax the season before moving to Livepool, and continued that rich form with the Merseyside club.
Fernando Torres – Liverpool to Chelsea
Probably one of the most shocking deadline day moves of all time. Fernando Torres was becoming a bit of a cult hero at Liverpool before suddenly appearing on deadline day outside of Stamford Bridge back in 2011. The striker was the most expensive transfer in the Premier League at the time and held that record until Angel Di Maria's move to Manchester United in the last transfer window.
