It’s not every day we see home supporters rise to their feet and applaud an opposition player for a stellar performance, but today the Fan Park Crew brings you five such occasions.
Manchester United 4-3 Real Madrid (2002-03, Champions League)
The Brazilian was absolutely sensational on the day and even scored a hat-trick for his team, but it wasn’t enough as Manchester United won the game. When Ronaldo got substituted, the Theatre of Dreams erupted and the Old Trafford crowd gave him the applause he rightfully deserved.
Real Madrid 0-3 Barcelona (2005-06, La Liga)
This is one of the most memorable El Clasico moments around, and it involved Ronaldinho running Real Madrid ragged at the Bernabeu. The footage of a Real Madrid-supporting father and son applauding the Brazilian was a brilliant footballing moment and broadcasted all over the world.
Alessandro Del Piero
Real Madrid 0-2 Juventus (2008-09, Champions League)
Days before Del Piero’s 34th birthday, he treated the Bernabeu to a stunning display of football which helped guide his side to a famous win against Los Blancos. The Bernabeu faithful showed their appreciation for the little Italian maestro and applauded him off the park
Atletico Madrid 1-3 Barcelona (2008-09, Copa Del Rey)
The Argentinian has had many memorable performances in his career, but to get the Vicente Calderon to rise to their feet is something special and that tells you the type of performance Messi racked up.
Liverpool 0-3 Real Madrid (2014-15, Champions League)
After running out for bitter rivals Manchester United earlier in his career, Cristiano Ronaldo still managed to receive a standing ovation from the Anfield crowd. Real Madrid blew Liverpool away on the night with an utterly dominant display and Ronaldo was given some respect for his hard work.
Can you think of five enemies that where given respect?
