Following the news that Kaizer Chiefs youth product Hendrik Ekstein had signed a deal with the club, fans will no doubt be feeling optimistic to the fact that a new superstar could be on the rise.
He quickly drew comparisons to former Chiefs legend Jabu Mahlangu for the innovative and skilful way he plays the game. Relatively small in frame, quick feet and the skill to match, one could easily see why the 24-year-old was instantly loved amongst the Amakhosi fans on his breakthrough into the first team.
‘Pule’ as he is also known to our adoring fans, came on in the 71st minute of Chiefs' 4-0 drubbing of EDU Sports in the Nedbank Cup last week and instantly made his presence felt.
At one stage he even hit the crossbar and set up the third goal of the game with a perfect cross to pick out striker Katlego Mphela.
It was this kind of impact that Mahlangu had every time he put on a Chiefs kit, and if Ekstein manages to keep his head tightly screwed on his shoulders, he could even become the club's next poster boy.
Since the days of Mahlangu, Scara Ngobese and John Moshoeu not many Chiefs players have had the ability to thrill and pull crowds to the stadiums week in and week out.
Could Ekstein be that player?
