Kaizer Chiefs stand in line to see seven to eight players leave Naturena at the end of the season, with a number of those potentially leaving on a free transfer. So how much money could they miss out on?
Bobby Motaung is usually very cautious when it comes to spending money and he does everything in his power to keep the books balanced, but this season he has come under fire.
When a player is in his last six months of his contract, his value traditionally drops to a quarter of what his original value would be if approaching his final months on a deal.
So for example, if Benni McCarthy was valued at R20 million in a normal contract, his final six months value would drop to R5 million.
Although we do not have access to what prices the club would ask for the player, we had a look at international valuation site Transfermarkt and what they had the players valued at…
Market Value On Full Contract: R12.35 million
Market Value On Last Six Months: R3.08 million
Market Value On Full Contract: R2.6 million
Market Value On Last Six Months: R650 000
Market Value On Full Contract: R1.3 million
Market Value On Last Six Months: R325 000
Market Value On Full Contract: R975 000

George Lebese (Has a one-year option that can be exercised)
Market Value On Full Contract: R5.2 million
Market Value On Last Six Months: R1.3 million
Market Value On Full Contract: R1.95 million
Market Value On Last Six Months: R487 500
Market Value On Full Contract: R3.57 million
Market Value On Last Six Months: R893 750
Market Value On Full Contract: R5.85 million
Market Value On Last Six Months: R1.46 million
Going by the fact that these players could leave at the end of the season, Chiefs could face the possibility of two colossal losses.
So if Chiefs sold each of these players before their last six months of their contract, they could possibly have accumulated an income of around R33.79 million.
But we know this will not be the case, as all the above mentioned eight players are in their final six months of their contracts, and could potentially leave on a free too.
As you can see, this is a huge figure, and if these eight players don’t extend with Chiefs by the time their contract comes to an end.
If the club had sold the players, or agreed to let them go on a pre-contract during their final six months, the club still could’ve possibly earned roughly R8.44 million from these players. Which could’ve decreased the potential loss of a full contract sale to R25.35 million…
The R25.35 million figure could then be further shortened if Chiefs decide to sell Eric Mathoho, whose Transfermarkt value sits at R7.8 million.
That would then bring the figure to R17.55 million, but alas we cannot be certain that Chiefs will sell him, but this is just the most extreme possibility.
This is crazy money! What do you make of this?
* Note Transfermarkt’s values might not always be a fair reflection as it is based on their own interpretations and evaluations that are updated a few times per season. Player values and figures could be vastly different in the local market.
