As the biggest club in South Africa, we know our team will always have the best talent at our disposal. We strive for greatness and these big-time footballers are at the forefront of title success.
Having said that, is it time that we outsource some of our best talent to some of the top leagues in Europe?
The idea of sending the best talent abroad is to hone their skills and ultimately make it on the biggest stages in the world. Not only will the players better their careers, but the national team benefits tremendously because of it.
Ajax Cape Town, for one, is notorious for sending their most gifted players abroad - with the added beneficiary of sharing close ties with Ajax Amsterdam in the Netherlands.
Orlando Pirates sent names like Andile Jali and Tokelo Rantie abroad after they had performed well in the Premier Soccer League. Most recently, even Mamelodi Sundowns had a representative in Europe, with Siyanda Xulu plying his trade with Rostov in Russia.
These are all young players who could become the next poster boys for South Africa in major European leagues. Locally, most South African poster boys are from Naturena and I feel that more effort needs to be made with regards to making our youngsters dreams come true to play abroad.
For years names like Siphiwe Tshabalala and Itumeleng Khune have been linked with big moves abroad, with no urgency being made for these players to be promoted to European leagues.
Are our stars held back to some extent in terms of making it in the global game?
