Mpumalanga Black Aces coach Clive Barker hailed Mamelodi Sundowns attacker Themba Zwane as the best player he had ever coached. This is something really hard to grasp, knowing that he had mentored names such as Doctor Khumalo and John Moshoeu in the past.
At the age of 25, could Zwane really be compared to a great such as 16v?
Let’s not forget that at the age of 25, Khumalo had already won the South African Player of the Year award. Zwane is yet to win such an individual accolade, this owing to the fact that he may still be coming into his own in the Premier Soccer League.
Zwane did, however, begin his Bafana Bafana career around the same time Khumalo did. At 25, 16v was named in the national team squad following the re-admission to FIFA. Zwane now has five Bafana caps to his name, so one could say both players had been introduced to the national set-up at the same point in their careers.
The difference is that during the 90’s, Khumalo had helped Chiefs to three league titles and five various cups. Let’s not forget that at the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations, Khumalo was at the top of his game and became a national hero.
Despite Barker's comments, do you think Zwane has the potential to go down as a better player than 16v.
What is your take on Barker’s sentiments?
