Matthew Rusike may not be a popular figure amongst the most passionate of Kaizer Chiefs supporters and this is because he is yet make a position his own Naturena. I say ‘a position' because of his ability to play as a winger and striker.
With the Zimbabwean’s future uncertain at the club, as he has not been offered a new deal at the club, can coach Stuart Baxter afford to lose a utility player of his kind? No, not right now and here is why.
Being a player who adds depth to the squad in the sense that he can play in two position is an instant plus for him and the club. Should there be a winger’s crisis at the club, he could put his hand up in that regard.
Also, we know that there is a strikering problem at the club and Rusike has already been helping out in that regard. Baxter makes it no secret that he likes the player, as he recently said he chooses Rusike because of his die-hard attitude and will to win.
There are many thoroughbred strikers at the club that has not had their scoring boots on for quite some time. Rusike too has not been a prolific scorer of note but still gets the nod from time to time, which is an indication of Baxter's admiration of him.
The club may want to rethink of letting him go because he is the closest player we have to the ‘Kingston Nkhatha’ type of player Baxter perfers to utilise in his football philosophy.
Coupled with the idea of Rusike being a hard runner and tireless worker, and that he is a utility player of some sorts, makes him a player the club can’t really afford to let go right now. Let’s not forget that Rusike has not complained once about his lack of game time.
Having said that, do you think we should do our best to keep him at the club?
