Orlando Pirates may have lifted the Maize Cup this past weekend, but their pre-season numbers have left little to be desired. Let's break them down!
Muhsin Ertugral's squad has undergone quite the transition since the opening of the transfer window, and they have welcomed a host of new players, while letting others go.
So far, Pirates have participated in three mini-tournaments over the course of their pre-season, and the results are not convincing at all.
The Carling Black Label Cup was their first defeat of pre-season, with rivals Kaizer Chiefs securing a 2-0 victory inside 90 minutes.
The Buccaneers then travelled to Namibia to participate in the Dr Hage Geingob Cup, where they lost both their fixtures.
The first was a 3-1 defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns, while the second defeat (a third place play-off) saw Ertugral's charges lose 8-7 on penalties to African Stars.
Meanwhile, the Mayfair outfit needed another shootout in the Maize Cup against Platinum Stars, following a goalless draw, and they walked away 3-1 winners on penalties on this occasion.
What makes this all the more astounding is that the Sea Robbers have not won a game inside 90 minutes, while only winning one fixture so far.
A solitary goal has been scored inside regulation time (against Sundowns), while Pirates have fired blanks in the rest of their fixtures.
Here is a breakdown of their pre-season fixtures:
Carling Black Label Cup: Kaizer Chiefs 2-0 Orlando Pirates
Dr Hage Geingob Cup:
Mamelodi Sundowns 3-1 Orlando Pirates
Third Place Play-off: African Stars 0-0 Orlando Pirates (8-7 loss on penalties)
Maize Cup: Platinum Stars 0-0 Orlando Pirates (3-1 win on penalties)
