One could say that in recent times, South Africa have been fortunate enough to choose from a vast array of top quality midfielders. A couple of days ago, coach Shakes Mashaba selected a squad for two intentional friendlies, which will be played against Swaziland and Nigeria later this month, with the team featuring quite a few overseas-based midfielders.
Mashaba, as we know, opts to play with both Andile Jali and Dean Furman as the base in midfield - despite both being defensive-minded midfield generals. Apart from the Jali and Furman partnership working well, what other combinations would you like to see in the middle of the park?
Lebogang Phiri, Oupa Manyisa, Bongani Zungu, Kamohelo Mokotjo, Thulani Serero and May Mahlangu make up the rest of the midfield department, with all adding different qualities to the side.
Mashaba made it no secret that he likes playing with defensive midfielders because like Jali and Furman, Phiri and Mahlangu are also able to graft in midfield.
The trio of Manyisa, Zungu and Mokotjo are all versatile midfielders with the ability to play both in an advanced or deep lying playmaking role.
It would take some courage to part the pairing of Jali and Furman, but looking at the top quality names behind the two, there is no doubt they could do the job just as well.
Who would you choose as your best midfield partnership other than Jali and Furman?
