With the ageless Cristiano Ronaldo still banging in the goals, we throw it back to the time when he shocked the world with a gravity-defying free-kick. Check it out!
The year was 2008, and the then-Manchester United star was having a season many believed to be his breakout campaign. In a year that saw the Red Devils claim a Premier League and UEFA Champions League title, Ronaldo ran riot in a 42-goal spree.
One of the most special of the 42 goals he scored came in a League encounter against Portsmouth, and his free-kick against Pompey is still raved about today.
With the dead ball situated off to the goalkeeper's left just outside the penalty box, the angle naturally favoured a left-footer. In total confidence, however, the Portugal talisman stepped up and did his signature dead-ball stance.
Utilising the knuckleball technique, Ronaldo rifled the ball into the top-left corner of the goal, leaving English goalkeeper David James rooted to his spot.
At a time when social media was not quite as prevalent as it is today, Ronaldo's free-kick against Portsmouth made waves around the world and featured on nearly every goalscoring compilation going that season.
