Some of the most entertaining football is played when rivals lock horns. Pride, passion and bragging rights are always up for grabs when two such teams meet and sometimes even cities are divided.
In the PSL, we have rivalries such as the Tshwane and Soweto Derbies. However, a new one may be in the offing. After recent matches between the two, have Kaizer Chiefs and Ajax Cape Town started a new rivalry?
There are a number of factors that indicate something could be brewing between the two teams – here are three.
Steve Komphela vs Roger De Sa
With the two teams having played each other a couple of times already this season, Steve Komphela and Roger De Sa have many opportunities to try to outwit each other. Thus far, one could argue De Sa has the upper hand, but we can be sure there are more twists in this tale yet.
Cape Town Football vs Johannesburg Football
For years, clubs in Soweto and Pretoria dominated South African football. Cape Town has produced some of the best talents in country, but the football remained in the shadow of that from clubs in Jozi and Pretoria. At the moment, Chiefs and Ajax seem to consistently find each other in heated battles and this could just be another factor contributing to a potential derby.
Amakhosi And The Cape Town Stadium Saga
Adding fuel to the fire is the fact Chiefs were granted permission to use the Cape Town Stadium, which is Ajax's home ground, for three "home" fixtures this season. The Ikamva camp was apparently not pleased with the decision made, so this should make for an interesting angle when the teams meet again.
Do you think Chiefs and Ajax have started a new rivalry?
