The Colour of Icon is Black

When it comes to creating an iconic car for an iconic football club such as Orlando Pirates, the one question you don’t need to ask is the colour of the paint job.

“Black,” says Gino Lange, the owner of LA Customs in Paarl, as he looks at the Gusheshe in his workshop that he’s currently rebuilding for Vodacom’s Sisonke Siya Winna campaign.

“With Orlando Pirates and a Gusheshe, there’s only one choice. It’s black on black on black. Usually, there’s a bit of back and forth with the client when it comes to colour choice. But not in this case. It’s just black because that is very Orlando Pirates.”

Lange and his team have been tasked by Vodacom with bringing back the past and recreating the glory and nostalgia of the Eighties and Nineties through the one and only iconic vehicle that every player from Marks Maponyane to Edward Motale wanted to own – the BMW 3 series e30 edition. Or the Gusheshe, as it’s known.

This season, one lucky Orlando Pirates fan will win this completely custom rebuilt Gusheshe in the colour and style of the Buccaneers.

After scouring the country and diving deep into car forums, Gumtree and Facebook Marketplace, Lange finally found the Gusheshe he was looking for. And the dream is currently being turned into reality in the LA Customs workshop, where this legendary car is being given its iconic paint job.

“The official name of the colour is Jet Black. It’s an off-the-shelf colour, which is preferable because it means the eventual owner will be able to do touch-ups at a later stage if necessary.”

While black may be one of the simplest colours out there, it’s not necessarily the easiest when it comes to the paint job on this car.

“A black car is very difficult to paint because black shows up everything. You can’t make even the smallest mistake. It’s got to be completely perfect.”

About 200 hours of labour will go into the creation of this iconic Gusheshe, and it begins with the painstaking process of getting it ready to paint.

“There is a lot of preparation involved before we can start with the painting. First you have to strip the car down completely. Then you sand it and block it. Next you apply the primer, and then you get it sprayed. Then it’s a question of lining up all the door panels and all of that. It’s a lot of work to get through the paint process alone. We’ve even gone with smoked headlights and taillights to keep with the black theme.”

And what will it look like when it’s finally done?

“Let me put it to you this way. If you parked this rebuilt Gusheshe next to a brand-new BMW M4, I guarantee you nobody would look at the M4. They’d be staring at the Gusheshe. It makes you feel a certain kind of way and gives you that nostalgia of that time.”

And it all starts with the colour black.

The same colour those iconic Orlando Pirates Football Club players in the 1930s used to have for their blazers, with the equally iconic white pirate badge emblazoned on them.
