Orlando Pirates have bigger plans for Thabiso Sesane as the young defender is getting the necessary support to grow into a better player at the club, Siya sources have revealed.

Against AmaZulu FC on the weekend as Pirates advanced to the semi-finals of the Nedbank Cup with an emphatic 4-2 victory, Sesane was one of the top performers for Jose Riveiro’s side alongside Innocent Maela in the absence of regular centre-backs Tapelo Xoki and Nkosinathi Sibisi due to suspensions.

Sesane had also played a full match in the previous fixture against Golden Arrows, which was his second league appearance for the campaign.

Earlier indications had been that the 23-year-old centre-back would be sent on loan for regular game time as Bucs want to see him improve, with the defender touted as the next big player for the club.

Having previously been at Jomo Cosmos and All Stars on respective loan spells, Sesane has been linked with another loan to Chippa United.

However, indications from sources are that the Buccaneers could decide to keep the player to fight for his place in the star-studded team next season, depending on his progress in the remaining matches of the season.

“For him (Sesane), there has never been any doubt about his quality. He is a player that the club rates highly and expecting a lot from, having come through their development. It’s just that he hasn’t been getting regular game time, and the club has always been willing to assist youngsters in his situation by sending them on loan. He’s done very well in the games he has played so far,” said the source.

Former Orlando Pirates development coach Mandla Qhogi, who worked with Sesane as a youngster, speaks highly of the defender.

Asked about the best player to have ever come out of Pirates’ development, Qhogi said, and in part, speaking to Soccer Laduma in edition 1342, “It’s a tough one, but for me, a player like Thabiso Sesane would be up there. Yes, he hasn’t been seen enough so far, but there is a lot of potential in that boy.”
