It seemed as if Die Schwarzroten were finally going to suffer their first defeat of the campaign in all competitions during the second leg of their UEFA Europa League semi-final against AS Roma on Thursday night.

Two penalties from Leandro Paredes had put Giallorossi up 2-0, but the German champions never lost hope and an own goal from Gianluca Mancini in the 82nd minute gave Leverkusen the chance to grab a late equaliser, and so they did, when Josip Stanisic scored in the 97th minute to ensure that the Spaniard's side remain with an unblemished record for the whole season.

The match at the Stadio Olimpico was their 12th game without a loss in the European competition, and having played 32 league matches without defeat and claimed five victories in the DFB-Pokal, Leverkusen have now gone 49 matches unbeaten throughout the 2023/24 campaign.

This beats the 48-game unbeaten run Benfica went on between 1963 and 1965, with Leverkusen now the holders of the lengthiest unbeaten run in the history of European club football. A remarkable achievement considering that when Alonso took charge of the club in late 2022, the team was one place outside of the relegation zone.

This season, they've won the Bundesliga for the first-time ever, and now more history beckons as they are on the cusp of winning both the German Cup and the Europa League, having reached the final of both.

Should they win their two remaining league matches, they could also become the first ever German top-flight side to finish a Bundesliga season unbeaten.
