SSU's prisoners project

SuperSport United, Department of Justice and Correctional Services and FIFA Foundation launched the first Twinning Project in Africa on Monday.

The launch featured several dignitaries including Commissioner of Department of Correctional Services Makgothi Thobakgale and the Minister of Justice and Correctional Services Ronald Lamola.

The Twinning Project is a charity based in England that helps prisoners "find a pathway back into society through the power of football," as stated on their website.

The charity works with professional football clubs with the objective of twinning every prison in England and Wales with a nearby professional football club. The aim is to engage prisoners in England and Wales in football-based programmes, helping them to improve their mental and physical health, wellbeing and obtain a qualification, helping to improve their life chances and gain employment on release.

The Twinning Project have partnered with English Premier League clubs such as Arsenal, Tottenham, Liverpool, Aston Villa, Bournemouth, Brighton & Hove, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, Burnley, Newcastle United, Manchester United and Manchester City, who all have foundations to engage in charitable courses like this.

SuperSport United are the first team in Africa to partner up with the Twinning Project and their launch event culminated in a match between some of the inmates against Matsatsantsa legends.

The final score was 1-1 at regulation time and the match had to be decided on penalties.  Former Bafana Bafana striker Katlego Mphela netted for the SSU Legends, with the inmates equalized in the dying minutes of the match and ultimately went on to win the game, 2-1 on penalties.

The Matsatsantsa legends team featured the likes of Edward Motale, Thapelo Liau, Aubrey Lekwane and Desmond Chauke.

SuperSport United's Senior team players, Onismor Bhasera, Thulani Hlatshwayo, Lyle Lakay, Jesse Donn, Siphesihle Ndlovu, Phathutshedzo Nange, Washington Arubi and Keegan Johannes were also present at the launch.
