The story

Mamelodi Sundowns legends and former players; Joel 'Fire' Masilela, Themba Mnguni, Lovers Mohlala, and Koketso Mmotong have taken time to reminisce about the life and legacy of 'Goldfingers', who passed on in May 2023 due to illness.

Goldfingers was not only a long serving Communications Manager at Downs but also staunch supporter, and was a loyal servant of football in South Africa.

He was involved in Sundowns from it's formative years in the 1970s and lived to see Masandawana reach unbelievable highs both in SA's top flight and on the continental scene.

"He was special, he was smart and he was unique. He was something else, and was every player, not only at Mamelodi only. The majority of the players that played for Mamelodi Sundowns, they came through Bra Alex," said Joel Masilela to journalist Mahlatse Mphahlele

"He was brave enough, he was a man that always wanted to see people smiling and joking around. He was always socializing, every time you saw bra Alex, you'll find him surrounded by people, talking and people would be laughing and cracking jokes, that was Bra Alex," he added.

Koketso Mmotong, who joined Downs in 2008 from Silver Stars and retired in 2013, said Goldfinger played a key role in him joining Masandawana.

"I chose Sundowns because of him. He's someone that I looked up to and it was my wish to play for Sundowns. You can't play for Sundowns if you are not that special and he was the one that would say: 'That boy must come and play for Sundowns.' He represented Sundowns so well, I think the nickname 'Bafana Ba Style' was inspired by him, he was a very stylish man, that's Bra Alex for you," he reflected.

"When I joined Sundowns, I had found a home and a lawyer at the same time. Bra Alex would represent me in anything that I do wrong and make it right. He was such a kind person, he was a mediator between the players and the management," explained Lovers Mohlala.
