UJ Secure Final Spot After Thrashing UCT 4-0
Varsity Women’s Football Match Report: Semi-final
UJ made it look easy in the first Varsity Women’s Football semi-final with a commanding 4-0 win as they ran riot against UCT to book their place in the final.
The Orange and Black army was in full swing for most of the match with Precious Matabologa scoring a brace and Katlego Mabuza and Beauty Kekana scoring the other two goals.
UJ started with fire as Matabologa in the number 10 jersey played a number of delightful passes but her teammates lacked finishing prowess in the first 15 minutes.
UCT had one brilliant chance to score the opening goal but Emilia Aggouras’ stretching foot missed the ball by centimetres with the goal gaping in front of her.
UJ dominated possession with Amanda Mthandi at the heart of most of their opportunities. UJ had to wait until the 22 minute for their first goal when Katlego Mabuza hit a left-foot strike past Panyana to put her side 1-0 up.
UJ’s midfield was splitting the UCT defence with precision and Nolwazi Mathebula’s cross from the right-hand side found Mabuza’s header, but the ball bounced off the crossbar and the score stayed at 1-0.
UJ extended their lead to 2-0 early in the second half when Beauty Kekana scored from the left-hand side as she tucked the ball away into the far post.
UJ were now ruling the roost and looked comfortable on the ball with Kekana, Mthandi and Potso Aphane playing delightful football in tandem.
UJ missed numerous chances and could easily have added four more goals to their tally. Matabologa though had the final say when she added third and fourth goals with seven minutes to go to put the cherry on the cake as UJ booked their place in next week’s final.
