The Figures: South Africa’s Biggest Overseas Transfers This Year

Which SA Transfers Overseas Were The Biggest?

By Soccer Laduma - Sep 19, 2017 11:58 AM
More and more South Africans seem to be making the move overseas in the last year, and one player recently smashed the record for a Mzansi-born star.

Check out the fees in Rand in the gallery above

Five South African footballers moved for upwards of €1 million – around R16m – this year so far, although the most expensive is a player that will never turn out for Bafana Bafana after committing to the Greek national team.

Panagiotis Retsos smashed the record for a South African when he was bought from Olympiacos by Bayer Leverkusen for a reported fee of around €22m, but after making his competitive debut for Greece last month he is no longer eligible for the country of his birth.

Amiens’ Bongani Zungu signing – believed to be worth €2.5m, is the biggest transfer fee this year for a Bafana international, while Dolly’s transfer to Montpellier from Mamelodi Sundowns is the biggest directly from South Africa.

Phakamani Mahlambi’s big money move to Al Ahly from Bidvest Wits is worth around €1.3m as a base price, although could rise substantially given the add-ons involved in the deal.

Brentford got a bargain when they landed Kamohelo Mokotjo for a reported fee of about €1m, while Lebogang Manyama and Lars Veldwijk are believed to have moved for around €600,000 and €375,000 respectively.

Which SA overseas transfer do you think will be the most successful?

But Restos is still confused about his nationality, i wouldn't count him in as a South African yet.

Restos can no longer be regarded as a South African. He was born in SA but he is Greek & a fully fledged international after making his debut for the Greek national team last month.
