The number of squad players used over the course of a campaign generally indicates that a team either has great strength in depth, that there were a lot of injuries or that coaching changes have created a lack of consistency. In Pirates’ case, it is likely the third scenario.
Three different coaches took charge of the Buccaneers last season, with Muhsin Ertugral, Augusto Palacios and Kjell Jonevret all occupying the hot seat at some point over the course of the campaign. Naturally, with different tactical setups and favoured players, Pirates made full use of the players available to them in their squad. In fact, Pirates used the fourth most players throughout the season, fielding 34 different players.
It was only Highlands Park (three coaches and 35 players), Free State Stars (four coaches and 37 players) and Baroka FC (three coaches and 46 players) that fielded more players over the course of the season. Rounding off the top five were Platinum Stars, with Cavin Johnson fielding 34 players before his departure after the end of the season.
At the bottom end of the scale, SuperSport United and Polokwane City fielded just 25 players, the joint lowest tally for the campaign, with one and two coaches taking charge of the clubs, respectively.
