Transfer Update: City Sign Bloemfontein Celtic Midfielder
Cape Town City concluded the signing of Bloemfontein Celtic’s Lyle Lakay, strengthening Head Coach Benni McCarthy’s attacking department.
The 25-year-old’s deal with Celtic expired on June 30 and although Siwelele had an added one-year option set in place on the player’s contract, indications are that the club ran out of time to exercise the option as the general deadline date is on May 30.
The Siya crew reported yesterday that despite Celtic claiming that Lakay has one year left on his contract at the club, the player believes that he is a free agent and it is understood that the midfielder is set to argue his case against Siwelele.
However, City confirmed that the player has put pen to paper on a contract with the Mother City-based club, becoming their third signing ahead of the new 2017/18 season.
After the departure of Bhongolethu Jayiya from the Citizens, Lakay will now add the needed cover in the midfield as well as on the left wing.
City players return to pre-season training on July 01, as Coach McCarthy is set to hit the ground running with preparations for the new season, where they will be participating in domestic competitions as well as in the CAF Confederations Cup campaign.
