Steve Komphela Comments On Benni McCarthy's Changes To His Squad
Kaizer Chiefs head coach, Steve Komphela, thinks that Benni McCarthy can’t be faulted for the several changes he made to his squad following the fixture against Bidvest Wits on the weekend.
Cape Town City booked their place in the final of the MTN8 competition on Sunday, September 10, following a double-legged win over The Students.
However, coming into Wednesday night’s Absa Premiership clash against Chiefs at the Cape Town Stadium, City head coach, McCarthy, opted to make several changes to his MTN8 winning team introducing the likes of Sage Stephens and Tshepo Gumede, to replace Shuaib Walters and Taariq Fielies respectively.
Speaking after Chiefs’ 2-0 victory over the Citizens, Coach Komphela said that he understood why McCarthy opted to make so many changes ahead of the game.
“I must respect Benni, in fact I thought that it was very wise of him because if you just played a highly intense match, I don’t know who’s your next fixture and to be honest and genuine with you, it is only logical and sensible that any other manager would have thought likewise,” Komphela told media in the post-match conference.
“He decided to go for Edmilson compared to Seedat, Edmilson had a decent game as well, Fielies was not there but Gumede and Robyn did a good job and unfortunately Putsche got injured and all that, but Matsi, Nodada, I thought, you can’t fault Benni for that and any other manager could have and if you were to think otherwise, if he had played the same team in Johannesburg, would they have come out the same way? It might not have and then you start regretting if I could, if I would. It was no surprise because all the players they have there are very capable, honest respect to that,” he added.
