As he turns 50 today, Soccer Laduma reached out to some current and former footballers for their birthday wishes for Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs legend, Doctor Khumalo.
It’s now around 30 years after his Kaizer Chiefs debut and just over 20 years since he helped South African win their first – and only – African Cup of Nations title, and ‘16V’ certainly left his mark on the South African football fraternity.
Here’s what some of them had to say about him:
“I'd like to wish him a happy birthday… I remember one or two games when he played against Argentina, and he was a marvel to watch. Also, who can forget that famous goal he scored against Brazil
“In 1996 he gave the pass to Mark Williams for the winning AFCON goal, and honestly he was amazing. You’d just stare and praise him. He made things happen and knew what to do with the ball.”
Stanton ‘Stiga’ Fredericks
“Happy Birthday Mdokies!!!! May the lord bless you with health and goodwill!! Thanks for always pushing me to be the best that I can be!!!”
“Wishing Doc Khumalo a happy 50th birthday, and wishing him many more years to come. I hope God grants him what his heart desires.”
“A birthday message to the legend! I hope he had a great day, and many more. From the Booth family I just want to let him know that he's a living legend, and I’m ecstatic that I never had to play against him too often!
“I played with him recently in a legends game and he’s still got it, and always will.”
“I would like to wish South Africa and Kaizer Chiefs legend, Doctor ‘16v’ Khumalo, a happy birthday, and I will never forget all the shibobos that he used to give his opponents. What a legend.”
