THE BREAKDOWN: Is It Time For Sundowns To Cash In On Billiat?
Should Sundowns Let Khama Billiat Leave?
With Khama Billiat and Mamelodi Sundowns locked in negotiations for a new deal, we take a look at whether the time may be right to cash in on the 2015/16 Player of the Season.
In Soccer Laduma issue number 1033, the Siya crew revealed that the Brazilians could be facing a transfer saga with their star player’s deal set to come to an end in June next year and negotiations for an extension could be derailed by the Zimbabwean’s desire to play abroad. However, with a hypothetical European suitor making a potential bid, Sundowns could fetch a sizeable fee for the 26-year-old, who scored fewer goals and made fewer assists in 2016/17 than he did just a year earlier.

Billiat played fewer games in 2016/17 season, seeing almost 1 000 minutes less action, in comparison. This is likely behind his relatively lower goals and assists return. However, it becomes clear that he played a slightly more withdrawn role, taking more touch, making more passes, with better accuracy and assisting more shots for his teammates.
Despite taking fewer shots, however, his accuracy, conversion and distribution within the penalty area improved, showing that his attacking movements were more considered. This could simply be a result of changing instructions from Pitso Mosimane, or it could mean that the player is slowing down and hitting an early decline.
The answer as to whether it’s one or the other rests entirely with the Brazilians’ technical team and, therefore, the decision whether or not to let such a star go will take this into consideration. It remains to be seen how this saga could end, but there’s little doubt that it could be one of the most significant events in the local football scene until the transfer window slams shut.
