Manzini Targets Mbesuma and Nomvethe’s Records
Rhulani Manzini Wants 20 Goals This Season
AmaZulu striker, Rhulani Manzini has expressed his desire to become the first striker to score 20 Absa Premiership goals in a single season, since Siyabonga Nomvethe in the 2011/12 season.
Manzini, whose goalscoring record for Chippa United last season was well above par for strikers in the PSL, with more goals per 90 minutes (1.08) than any other striker in the league in 2016/17, having started just six games throughout the campaign.
Now with AmaZulu, who bought their PSL status from Thanda Royal Zulu prior to the current campaign, Manzini has made two appearances without scoring, but remains confident that he can be the first player in six years to score 20 goals or more in a single campaign, with his current teammate, Siyabonga Nomvethe having done so with Moroka Swallows in the 2011/12 season. However, he also acknowledged that he needs to remain fit, as he spent the majority of last season on the treatment table.
“I’m praying for an injury free season and am that the team (AmaZulu) stays up,” he told Soccer Laduma. “I want to score as many goals as possible. I will be trying for 20, but my main focus is with the team, not myself.”
Manzini also made mention of possibly earning a Bafana Bafana call-up, but insisted that his primary focus is to make a success of his team’s first season back in the top-flight, ambitiously targeting a place in a CAF qualifying spot.
“Even though I have my personal goals and next year is the (2018 FIFA) World Cup, I’m focusing on the team (AmaZulu). I even want to qualify for Africa, which would be a huge bonus,” he concluded.
Collins Mbesuma currently holds the PSL record for goals scored in a season, having found the net on 25 occasions with Kaizer Chiefs in the 2004/05 season.
