Ajax, Chiefs, Wits & SuperSport Lead The Way With Former Academy Stars

Ranking The ABsa Premiership's Youth Success

By Kyle Smith - Jun 18, 2017 12:36 PM @KyleLaduma

Development will always be part of the beautiful game and in Mzansi there are several clubs that have succeeded in developing some of the biggest stars in local football. Today, we take a look at which teams’ youth academy stars have accumulated the most appearances.

When looking at the accumulative appearances for academy stars, the four clubs that have the most league appearances for players from their youth academies are Ajax Cape Town, Kaizer Chiefs, Bidvest Wits and SuperSport United.

Ajax Cape Town are renowned for their development structures, which have produced a wealth of stars in the past, such as Keagan Dolly, Thulani Hlatshwayo and Steven Pienaar. However, in their current squad, Nathan Paulse has made 185 appearances for four different Absa Premiership clubs, while the likes of Mosa Lebusa, Travis Graham, Toriq Losper, Bantu Mzwakali and Rivaldo Coetzee make up the rest of their staggering 638 combined league appearances. This puts them far ahead of any other team in the league.

However, Chiefs currently have five academy players on their books that have seen action this season, in the form of Itumeleng Khune, Lorenzo Gordinho, Hendrick Ekstein, Emmanuel Letlotlo and Bruce Bvuma. Between them, they have accumulated 259 appearances between them. SuperSport United have three players on their books in the form of Ronwen Williams, Denwin Framer and Teboho Mokoena, who have made a combined 181 appearances between them, and Bidvest Wits have three players that have risen through the ranks, including Phumlani Ntshangase, Phakamani Mhlambi and Reeve Frosler, who have accumulated a total of 101 appearances between them.

Meanwhile at the other end of the charts, Orlando Pirates have no youth academy players in their squads that have made any appearances this season, which may be a concern for those in charge of the club’s development structures.

These are the top five teams and they experience that they boast from their youth ranks:

Ajax Cape Town – 638 league appearances

Kaizer Chiefs – 259 league appearances

SuperSport United – 181 league appearances

Golden Arrows – 151 league appearances

Bidvest Wits – 101 league appearances

SundayWorld Report: Kaizer Chiefs paying their young goalkeeper R5000 slave wages Bruce Bvuma, who turned 22 last month, does not own a car or cellphone and lives with his parents in Tshiawelo, Soweto. The player apparently uses taxis to fetch him from his home to the team's training sessions in Naturena. He sometimes borrows a car from his football agent DJ Cleo to run his errands. Bruce Bvuma has apparently been given a raw deal at Kaizer Chiefs after reports emerged he earns R5k a month. Bvuma joined the soccer club in March and has had to make do with the paltry salary which barely covers his transport costs and doesn’t allow him to have a cellphone or move into his own place. According to Sunday World, Bobby Motaung, Kaizer Chiefs manager has declined to comment. “Whether you are telling the truth or not I cannot comment because I don’t talk about players contracts in the media.” DJ Cleo, who manages Bvuma said he would not be drawn into discussing his client’s salary as it was disrespectful. Bvuma’s contract details how he will earn R8k from August, then R10k from August 2018 and R12k in 2019 and at the end of his contract this will increase to R15k per month. A source told Sunday World, Bvuma was keen on the exposure of playing for a big team and signed the contract with his eyes closed. “These are the things that kill our players because the public is expecting a player at this level and from such a club to be earning well. When he can’t meet those public expectations, then he gets psychologically disturbed and will not flourish as a player,” the source said. SA Football Players Union spokesperson Vusi Ntimane said the PSL was to blame for soccer players being exploited as they had not signed a minimum wage deal.

Kaizer Chiefs have no shame yaz. Boasting about academy products and all that mambo jamboree, all the while paying a measly R500 to one of their home grown talent.

It's very disappointing to see the so called 3 big teams of the PSL not producing enough players from the youth development, hence they should be leading by example according to me. Which brings me to wonder, what's the point of having a youth academy at a club and yet don't utilize it to the fullest? Well done to the likes of Ajex, Wits, Supper Sports and Arrows for recognizing efforts of the youth development in their clubs and rewarding them with much needed skills to compete at the grand stage. We need those guys brought up through the ranks as the future of our PSL & the national team depends on them. More needs to be done.
