Mahlambi Touches Down In Portugal

Phakamani Mahlambi Has Arrived In Portugal To Start His Trial With Guimaraes

By Joe Crann - Jul 22, 2017 09:32 PM @YesWeCrann
South Africa’s reigning Young Player of the Season, Phakamani Mahlambi, has touched down in Europe ahead of his trial in Portugal.

Mahlambi’s head coach at Bidvest Wits, Gavin Hunt, explained shortly after the 19-year-old picked up his award this month that he was headed to Portugal, saying that he would be going for a three-week trial.

Hunt mentioned both Vitoria de Guimaraes and Sporting Clube de Portugal as potential destinations for the young attacker, and it appears that he has ended up at the former where he will be alongside fellow South Africans, Bongani Zungu, Haashim Domingo and Thibang Phete.

Wits’ CEO, Jose Ferreira, confirmed to the Siya crew that the teenager has gone to Guimaraes on a short trial that will begin shortly.

Meanwhile, Glyn Binkin, the player's agent, said, "I'm delighted at the opportunity that Guimaraes has presented the player with. It's a very ambitious club who finished 4th last season and will compete in the Europa League this season. It has strong ties to SA through Mario Ferreira and has three other South Africans in the squad so if all goes well he will feel right at home here.

"Thanks also to Bidvest wits for creating the opportunity and more importantly for allowing the player to follow his dreams and for not standing in his way when the opportunity arose. Phakamani is under no illusions as to how difficult it will be, but we know Phakamani will make us all proud."

The attacker, who will start training on Monday, has scored nine goals in 27 Absa Premiership games since making his debut in 2015, and made his Bafana debut back in March.

Orlando Pirates star players Thabo Rakhale and Thabo Qalinge have allegedly undergone circumcision procedures two weeks ago. FNB Stadium. Orlando Pirates Thabo Rakhale during their Black Label Cup with Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg. PHOTO:ANTONIO MUCHAVE/SOWETAN As a result, the two players are understood to have missed training sessions and friendly games against Polokwane City, Bloemfontein Celtic and Bidvest Wits that took place at Wits University on Friday. It is believed that the pair will also miss the Carling Black Label Cup that will pit their team against arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs at a sold-out FNB Stadium on Saturday. Rakhale's agent Mandla Mthembu neither denied nor confirmed the news, saying it was a "private matter". "The medical team of the club are the ones who are better placed to talk on the matter," he said. Orlando Pirates administrator Floyd Mbhele said: "It would be unfair for the club to comment on the matter because circumcision is a personal thing, which unlike pregnancy is not out in the open. All I know is that the players are at training." He did not deny that Rakhale and Qalinge were not part of the friendly games at Wits on Friday. Qalinge's phone rang unanswered and he did not respond to our questions sent via SMS. A South African Football Players Union (Safpu) official close to the players confirmed that the pair had a snip and their operations have affected their team's plans for the upcoming beer jamboree. The official, who did not want to be named as he is not authorised to speak to the media, disclosed that the players were currently nursing circumcision wounds at their homes. "They underwent the procedure at a doctor's practice in Parktown two weeks ago. They went together to the doctor and were supporting each other after the procedure," said the union official.
