Mangena: They Just Need To Give Komphela A Chance
Mike Mangena Defends Steve Komphela
Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Mike Mangena has defended Steve Komphela, saying that he sees positives in Amakhosi’s performances this season, despite the poor results.
Komphela has, once again, come under pressure after Chiefs started the 2016/17 campaign with two defeats to SuperSport United in the MTN8 and the Absa Premiership and a draw against Bloemfontein Celtic in the opening league game of the season. Mangena has discussed the high expectations for the MTN8 and has also said that Komphela was unlucky to see Erick Mathoho get sent off in the 2-1 loss on matchday two in the league.
“The team has been put under pressure. A lot was expected of him (Komphela), in terms of the MTN8,” he told Soccer Laduma. “And he was so unfortunate in the league game against SuperSport. (Erick) Mathoho got a red card – one of the key, key players got a red card – and look at how they played. They played out of their socks in the second half!”
Mangena went on to say that Komphela managed to get his team to perform far better in the second half of that game and that the team can take a lot of positives out of the last 45 minutes.
“Then you ask yourself, can you blame a coach for that?” he continued. “It’s unfortunate for Steve because it’s so difficult to play with 10 men against a team like that. It’s still too early and they just need to give him a chance now because you can see that there’s something in that team now. They can fight back and I saw a lot of positives from that team, especially in the second half against SuperSport where they went 2-0 down and they took the game to SuperSport, scoring a goal and going for the second.”
Chiefs are in action again when the league resumes after the international break, taking on Cape Town City on 13 September.
