Banks: Maybe Teams Want More Money From Chiefs
How Did Chiefs Miss out On Ntshangase?
After Baroka beat Kaizer Chiefs in the race to sign Siphelele Ntshangase, club legend Banks Setlhodi has speculated as to why the Glamour Boys have failed to land yet another target.
Ntshangase, who has already earned four caps for Bafana Bafana, despite playing in the NFD, is considered one of the finest talents in the country and has reportedly been on Amakhosi’s radar, as well as a number of other clubs’, for some time. However, on Tuesday, the Siya crew revealed that Ntshangase has finalised a move to Baroka.
Now, the former Chiefs shot-stopper has questioned what is happening behind the scenes at the club that has allowed a player of Ntshangase’s quality to join another club.
“Sometimes, you ask yourself, ‘who’s in charge of that department (player recruitment)?’ and whenever Chiefs are targeting a player, they never seem to get him,” he told Soccer Laduma. “And then some other team gets him.”
Setlhodi went on to say that in the past, clubs used to inflate prices for the players that Chiefs were interested in. That has also been the case where rival clubs like Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns have beaten them to a players’ signature but admitted that, with this deal, he has no idea as to what has transpired.
“Before, we knew what the problem was because if Chiefs wanted the player, the other club would ask for say R10 million. If they didn’t want to pay that R10 million, they’d send the very same player to another team at a smaller price. Now, I don’t know what the problem is with that department. I can’t tell because I’m not in charge of recruiting players at Chiefs,” he continued. “Maybe the teams want more money from Chiefs, but you must remember that there are players that they wanted to get at Chiefs… they were always beaten by Sundowns or Pirates or whoever. Maybe they made a better offer… But I can’t speculate. I don’t have the answer for why they can’t get the players they want at Chiefs.”
