How Cape Town City Edged Orlando Pirates To Sign Striker

By Soccer Laduma - Sep 21, 2017 04:34 PM

Head Coach Benni McCarthy was the deciding factor in Victor Obinna joining up with Cape Town City despite keen interest from Orlando Pirates.

City announced the signing of the former Inter Milan striker on September 12, where it was subsequently revealed by the Siya crew that Pirates were also in the race to land the player’s signature.

According to Siya sources close to the Buccaneers’, Pirates had tabled an offer to Obinna which was believed to be just over R500 000 per annum, with City offering a similar amount.

However, Head Coach McCarthy played a big role in the decision by the 30-year-old to join the Mother City-based club, with the Bafana Bafana legend revealing to the media that he and Obinna maintained a friendship since their time together at English Premier League outfit, West Ham United.

“He is a really good friend of mine, I know Victor from his days with the Nigerian national team when he used to be a striker partner to Obafemi Martins back then. But then I came across him at West Ham, that’s where we played together,” McCarthy said at the time.

“He was a bit young and I almost sort of took him under my wing because I was on my way out and he was in so, we just became friends and always just kept in touch all these years and obviously I learnt that he was free and he doesn’t have a club. Of course, when you are in Europe, why would you want to come to South Africa, so I had to pursue him a little just to get himself back into football again. To my shock and surprise, he said – why not, what does he have to lose?” the City head coach added.
