Released Pirates Defender Attracts Interest
Former Orlando Pirates Defender Attracts Interest
Following his exit from Orlando Pirates, Patrick Phungwayo could soon get a new club as there is a team already showing interest in his services.
As reported on the Soccer Laduma website, Pirates confirmed parting ways with the defender and that the contract of the 29-year-old player has been terminated.
The Siya crew has been informed that Free State Stars are interested in Phungwayo. Stars are currently in search for a left back, following the departure of Simphiwe Mtsweni from Bethlehem.
As reported by the Siya crew, Ea Lla Koto are currently assessing the former Bloemfontein Celtic left back, Cheslyn Jampies and according to sources close to Stars, the club would be keen to strengthen their defence with Phungwayo.
Word reaching the Siya crew is that that the Bethlehem-based side is aiming to conclude a deal for Phungwayo before the transfer window closes on August 31.
Pirates have had a fairly good start to their 2017/18 Absa Premiership campaign, having secured one win and one draw in their first two league outings.
Before parting ways with Phungwayo, Pirates had five left backs at their disposal. Milutin Sredojevic and Rhulani Mokwena had Phungwayo, Mark van Heerden, Nkosinathi Mthiyane, Thabo Matlaba and Innocent Maela to choose from.
It seems as Maela is at the top of the pecking order at left back, while Matlaba has been played at right back. As a result, Phungwayo has been allowed to move on, after he found himself further down the pecking order.
Ea Lla Koto recently confirmed the appointment of Luc Eymael at the helm of the team, following Sammy Troughton’s exit and indications are that the Belgian coach has set his sights on strengthening the team’s defensive department, with Phungwayo’s name thrown in the mix as a possible addition.
