City Still Rotating To Find Their Number One

Cape Town City are yet to establish who their number one goalkeeper is, with Head Coach Benni McCarthy rotating between Shuaib Walters and Sage Stephens.

The Mother City-based club suffered back-to-back defeats against Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. McCarthy fielding two different goalkeepers for the two matches.

Speaking after Friday’s 1-0 win over Polokwane City, the Bafana Bafana legend says that he selects his goalkeepers based on their performances, which allows for healthy competition.

“We will see how this week’s training goes and how the goalkeepers fair because for me, like I said, they have to keep each other on their toes and they have to compete for places,” McCarthy told the media.

“Yeah, Shuaib is the most experienced goalkeeper and just because of last week’s mistake against Pirates, it hasn’t cost him his place, I was always going to rotate the goalkeepers and give Sage another opportunity and unfortunately for Shuaib it came on the back of him making a mistake against Pirates. But, when we get closer to the next game, Ajax, then I will see how the training is, how we are going to play and who will be in goals,” he added.

City will play away at the Cape Town Stadium on Saturday, September, 30, when they lock horns with Ajax Cape Town in the 2017/18 season’s first Ikapa derby.

It is a matter of giving the other goalkeeper a chance than looking for number 1 between the poles. Shauib has proved himself, if it was not for football politics, he should be Bafana Bafana's number 1....

This will cost Benni his career! All coaches who rotate their goalkeepers have not succeeded.
