Cape Town City head coach, Benni McCarthy, has thanked the spectators for the impressive turnout in the Cape Town derby which took place on Saturday, September 30.

The Citizens bagged a 2-0 win over their city rivals, Ajax Cape Town, claiming the bragging rights for the third time in a row.

An official from the Urban Warriors, who hosted the spectacle, confirmed that there were ±16 500 spectators at the Cape Town Stadium on Saturday.

Speaking at a post-match press conference, McCarthy, whose side played as the away team on the day, thanked the people of Cape Town for coming out in their numbers to support the Cape Town derby.

“First of all, I would like to thank the people of Cape Town for coming out and making this game what it was today. It was an unbelievable spectacle and I knew Cape Town always had it in them, but I didn’t expect the turnout was going to be like this,” McCarthy told the media.

“Yeah just for people supporting South African football, it was a wonderful display and that made it possible for us to win this game nicely as well,” he added.

@fisto vs zebraditor I could never be jealous of Sundowns and it's success. Sundowns' success to me is the same as that of Wits, Supersport, Platinum starts etc. it means nothing to me since they are not my main rivals. My main rivals are Kaizer Chiefs and their success in anything is always a thorn on my side, so get off your high horse and stop accusing people of being jealous of your small team.

To be honest, this derby has more spark than the Tshwane derby....There's real rivalry in this derby unlike some pretoria "derby" where it's called a derby only because the two teams are from the same city. If these two teams continue like this, their derby will be the second biggest derby in South Africa, behind the Soweto derby.
