Mahlambi Set For Portuguese Trial After PSL Win

Bidvest Wits' Phakamani Mahlambi Is Heading To Portugal

By Soccer Laduma - Jul 11, 2017 11:25 AM
Bidvest Wits’ exciting young attacker, Phakamani Mahlambi, will jet out to Europe shortly to begin a three-week trial with a club in Portugal.

The 19-year-old scooped up the Young Player of the Season gong last night at the PSL Awards in Johannesburg after an impressive showing in the second half of the Absa Premiership season, scoring six goals in 13 games for the Clever Boys as they went on to win the title.

Now, according to his head coach, Gavin Hunt, the teenager could be set for the next step in his career as he looks to follow in the footsteps of Bongani Zungu and Liam Jordan by heading to Portugal.

Hunt told the media last night, “He’s going overseas this week to Portugal. They’ll have a look at him there and let him train for about three weeks, which is good. It’s before the start of the season but hopefully, please God, he makes it.”

While there has been no confirmation of the club that Mahlambi will be going to, Hunt did mention the names of Vitoria de Guimaraes and Sporting Clube de Portugal, two clubs who have already had South African players on their books.

The Siya crew spoke to Glyn Binkin, Mahlambi’s agent, however, he was unable to divulge and information on the matter, simply stating that he was currently in Europe working on some options for a number of his clients.

That is an insult to our PSL.Our award winning player for trials and more so Portugal ?He isn't a trailing first before signing type of player. Portuguese club must send an offer and for their warning, 80+ millions will temp Wits.#RespectusPortuguese

@Mrule Most trials are more about what options a player brings to the team rather than how good is the player. example they even check maximum running speed a player can reach, amount of oxygen player's lungs can inhale/store and exhale at certain altitude (different from his country of origin), stamina, inbox or outbox player all such things. Depending on requirements then they sign or don't sign the trialist.

For Goal of the season, Shabba got it bcoz he got more votes from the fans. It reminds me of the Iwisa Charity Cup. Remember the voting system? Exactly! The goal keeper moved from his position to kick the ball during playtime, & not to take a set piece. The bicycle kick, wow! That goal made headlines overseas.

@Mrule if you r a club owner you will have to make yourself100percent sure(hence the trials), that you are bringing someone to the team who will bring good returns,.(it is nothing personal, just good business practice)

Phakaaathi Reporter Thabo Rakhale of Orlando Pirates during the Orlando Pirates training at Rand Stadium. (Photo by Lee Warren/Gallo Images) AmaZulu are planning to bring in a few experienced players as they seek to ensure that their stay in the Absa Premiership is not short lived. Usuthu are said to be having numerous planning meetings where the technical team have revealed their wish list. A Phakaaathi source has revealed that Teko Modise is among the players the coach Joey Antipas has on his wish list. “He is unlikely to have him though because his wages will be too high for the team. No final decision has been made though,” said the source. Modise became a free agent after his contract at Mamelodi Sundowns ended last month and has reportedly said he is willing to take a pay cut at another team. Another player Usuthu wanted was Orlando Pirates’ Thabo Rakhale but Phakaaathi understands that the Buccaneers refused the offer. “Yes Rakhale was one of the players we wished for. We need a creative player and he was seen as a perfect candidate plus he has the experience we need. But Pirates didn’t even want to listen to the offer,” added the source. Usuthu have however managed to get righ back, Thembela Sikhakhane from Pirates. Sikhakhane, who played a limited number of matches for Bucs last season, is expected to complete his move back to Durban on Tuesday or Wednesday.
