City claimed at 1-0 win over Polokwane at the Cape Town Stadium on Friday, September 22, this after suffering back-to-back defeats against Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.
Speaking after the match, McCarthy told the media that even although his side were confident on the day, they played with some caution in order to avoid going three games without a win.
“Listen, if you come (from) back-to-back losses against Chiefs and Pirates, the way you’ve played, the way you’ve dominated, but you didn’t take your opportunities. I think now, the third game, I think even though players are confident, it is still in the back of their minds – we can’t be too clever, we can’t be too cocky because we just lost two games, this is the team that can hit us on the counter and we saw how dangerous they were,” McCarthy told the media.
“I think, with the guys on the pitch, they played with it at the back of their heads that we lost two games and with the third one, the coach is going to go Hanover Park on us (laughs). So, they were a bit cautious and if it was a draw they would have probably said – coach, you know what, as long as we didn’t lose,” he added.
City will lock horns with Ajax Cape Town on Saturday, September, 30 at the Cape Town Stadium for 2017/18 season’s first Ikapa Derby in the Absa Premiership.
